Can I stick my oar in here?

Not wishing to in any way rubbish what Matthew is saying but DDS4 is
incredibly expensive when compared to the equivalent capacity hard drive
(even SCSI!) and of course if you use a removable HDD you can just plug it
back in and go whereas the DAT (DDS) would have to be restored meaning a lot
longer downtime (if you had any amount of data). IDE is probably the way to
go with the ridiculously cheap 60/80/100GB drives at ATA100 or 133 meaning
that speed is not really an issue for audio on IDE. Consider also using an
IDE raid controller and mirroring your audio- not necessarily the obvious
option if you have a PC (albeit you can add a PCI card) but if building one,
there are a number of fairly cheap motherboards with it on board now and
Intel do a nice server board (SE7500) with it built in.

WRT backups, I don't know about whether you are "allowed" to backup apps but
why would you want to anyway?? They take up space, therefore lengthen the
backup time and what's going to happen when you do a restore?-because of the
way Windows works (registry etc.), unless you Ghost the drive (complete
copy) you'll have far more problems than just reinstalling won't you? How
can you "install" an OS from a tape? Therefore if you install the OS and
then try to restore apps from tape they just won't work. Just reinstall apps
from the original discs then restore data. Obviously everyone will have all
the original discs and licence numbers for their software.............

On the subject of capacity, it was probably just a typo but DDS 4 is 20GB
native (40GB compressed). DDS3 is 12GB native at 24GB compressed.

Whatever form of backup you use, make sure it copies everything it needs to,
that you test it's integrity regularly and that it is removed from site- I'm
sure we all have horror stories of people losing data even when they'd done
a backup!
